Emerge Care

Health apps that keep your data on your phone

Most health apps store what you tell them in their own cloud. That is not automatically bad, but it means your symptoms, labs and chats sit on someone else's servers under their privacy policy, and some policies allow sharing with advertising partners.

We read each app's privacy policy or press coverage and compared where your health records actually live. "On your phone" here means the records and chats are stored on the device, not just encrypted on the way to a server.

We make Emerge Care, so it is listed first. Every other app is ranked on the criteria below, and each fact links to a comparison page with its sources.

Questions

Which health apps do not store data in the cloud?

Emerge Care stores health records and chats on your iPhone. Bevel keeps Apple Health data off its servers unless you turn on its AI features. The other apps we compared store data in their cloud, according to their own policies.

Are health apps covered by HIPAA?

Often not. HIPAA covers healthcare providers, insurers and their business associates. Many consumer apps say in their policies that they are not HIPAA covered entities, so read the privacy policy before you share health data.

Do health apps sell your data?

Some policies allow sharing identifiers or health information with advertising partners, or selling de-identified data. Check the "sell" and "share" sections of the privacy policy. Emerge Care never sells your data.

Does Emerge Care send anything off my phone?

When you ask a question, the message passes through Emerge Care's server to the AI model and back. The server keeps nothing and logs nothing. Your records and chats are stored on your iPhone.
