How should you measure blood pressure at home?
Ordinary things inflate a reading. What the guidance says about conditions, timing and why a log beats a single number.
A home reading is only as useful as the conditions it was taken in. General guidance is consistent: sit and rest beforehand, keep both feet on the floor and your back supported, rest your arm at heart height, and do not talk during the reading. A cuff placed over clothing, a full bladder, or caffeine or nicotine shortly before will all push a number up.
Timing matters as much as technique. Blood pressure follows a daily rhythm, so readings taken at wildly different times are not comparable. Taking them at roughly the same times each day makes the pattern legible.
The single most useful thing you can bring to an appointment is not one reading but several weeks of them, taken consistently. A clinician can do far more with a trend than with a number taken in a waiting room. Sustained very high readings are a matter for urgent care rather than a log.
